A periodontist is a dentist who has completed a two to three year post-graduate specialty program in periodontics. Periodontists specialise in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease, and placement of dental implants. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease. They also receive extensive training in analysing and performing both cosmetic and functional periodontal procedures. They treat more problematic periodontal cases such as those with severe gum disease, oral pathology, and complex medical histories. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatment involving both non-surgical and surgical procedures. Periodontists play an important role in managing oral inflammation which can also influence certain medical health issues.
